Private Vermelo was a Gear who fought during the final battle of Anvil Gate.
Biography
Early Life
Not much is known about Vermelo's early life except he later joined the Coalition of Ordered Governments Army as a medic when he became an adult.
Lambent Pandemic
Arrival to Anvil Gate
Vermelo was among the many Gears and civilians who chose to travel to Anvil Gate in Anvegad, Kashkur after the disbandment of the Coalition of Ordered Governments following the abandonment of Chairman Richard Prescott. The community was led by Mayor Lewis Gavriel and Colonel Victor Hoffman.
Victory Day
First Battle of Anvil Gate
Eighteen months after arriving to Anvil Gate, Sgt. Marcus Fenix arrived with other survivors of the CNV Sovereign. Sgt. Fenix brought the news that Chairman Prescott had returned and revealed that Professor Adam Fenix is still alive and held at an island facility known as Azura, and has discovered the Imulsion Countermeasure Weapon which could destroy the Lambent and end the Locust Horde. After the CNV Sovereign was destroyed by the Lambent, Chairman Prescott gave Sgt. Fenix the encryption key and died shortly after. They was to the data disk A2897 that Col. Hoffman discovered and stole back on Vectes, and was unable to crack open even with Cpl. Damon Baird's assistance. Arriving with the key, Sgt. Fenix hoped to find information on Azura. However, the entire Savage Locust army was on their tail, led by Queen Myrrah.
Vermelo was part of the battalion that helped defend the fortress from the oncoming Locust attack. After the first wave of Locust attacks, Vermelo and the Gears continued to fight the oncoming Locust as more survivors of the CNV Sovereign crash were arriving. Following their rescue, the Lambent began to overrun the area as well, creating a three-way battle between the Gears, Locust, and Lambent. The Hammer of Dawn was then somewhat repaired and used against the oncoming Locust and Lambent, including the Lambent Berserker, as Delta-One was able to destroy it. Cpl. Baird was then able to open the data disk and read the information about Azura. Sgt. Fenix then advised that they find fuel at Mercy or Char and use it fuel and repair a submarine at Endeavor Naval Shipyard in Halvo Bay. Meanwhile, the other half of Delta was in charge of finding reinforcements for the upcoming battle at Azura. Col. Hoffman and Sgt. Bernadette Mataki chose to stay behind and defend the fort. Vermelo chose the same and agreed to defend the fort with them.
Second Battle of Anvil Gate

During the next twenty-six hours, the Savage Locust and Lambent hordes continued to assault Anvil Gate. The Locust then used a Siegebeast to launch an artillery firebomb over the wall. Vermelo was moderately wounded by the explosion but was brought to his feet by Rua. Vermelo then rushed over and attended to the side of a wounded Gear trapped under a beam column. As he treated the Gear; Col. Hoffman, Sgt. Mataki, Rua, and Culda rushed up to defend the wall. Just as the Locust and Lambent began to overrun the garrison, the Imulsion Countermeasure was activated, and a wave of radiation vaporized the Lambent and neutralized the Locust by crystallizing them. Vermelo survived the battle and lived to see the end of the Locust War and Lambent Pandemic.

Behind the Scenes
- Vermelo is an alternative spelling of Vermello, which means "red" in Portuguese. This is addition to all the generic characters like Carmine, Gyules and Rojas in Gears of War were all given names that related to the color red to reference the fact that they were red shirts, a term coined from Star Trek fans referring to expendable, background characters that were created just to be killed off.
