South Village was an Outsider settlement near Fort Umson.
History[]
South Village was one of a number of small, independent settlements established by the Outsiders following the Locust War. It regularly traded resources and supplies with Fort Umson.[1] South Village was protected by a wall with a gate, and had a wide interior yard with the main hall at the center.[2]
In 42 A.E., after Fort Umson's population was abducted by the Swarm, South Village was also attacked. First Minister Mina Jinn of the Coalition of Ordered Governments sent a squad of DeeBees to investigate South Village and evacuate its people to New Ephyra, but by the time the DeeBees arrived, the Swarm was already deeply entrenched in the area and ambushed them. The DeeBees were utterly routed. The Swarm first scattered the DeeBees, causing them to abandon formation and coordination in favor of an every-man-for-himself approach, and then each unit was destroyed one-by-one. The Swarm, which had used Juvies, Drones, and even a Swarmak, suffered no apparent casualties.[2]
Jinn and Damon Baird witnessed the disaster remotely, with Baird monitoring the DeeBees' feeds using a secret backdoor built into their base code. For Jinn, the DeeBees' overwhelming defeat indicated that they needed to be reprogrammed for military duties, as she had no intention of risking the lives of real soldiers when the human population was so dangerously low. For Baird, who had never designed the DeeBees for the rigors of heavy combat, it meant that the DeeBees were inadequate to confront the Swarm and human soldiers were a necessity, as was bringing the Hammer of Dawn back online.[2]
