- "There's a place, up north. I think we can find you answers there."
- —Sgt. Marcus Fenix to Cpl. Kait Diaz.
The Second Mission to the New Hope Research Facility was a mission that took place in the first months of the Swarm Invasion. Following the siege of the Riftworm Village and the death of it's chief named Oscar Diaz, his niece named Corporal Kait Diaz and Lieutenant Delmont Walker traveled north to the New Hope Research Facility as Sergeant Marcus Fenix believed that it could house the information that was concerning Kait's connection to the Swarm and their interest in Reyna Diaz.
Prelude[]
Since the Rescue of Fort Umson, Cpl. Kait Diaz was suffering from the headaches, nightmares, visions and hallucinations for months. A majority of her visions included her family, the Swarm and the Locust Horde. In addition, the amulet that Cpl. Diaz inherited from her mother named Reyna Diaz bore the symbol of the Locust Horde which originally belonged to Cpl. Diaz's grandmother. Fearing possible rejection, Cpl. Diaz hid her visions and her Locust amulet from the Coalition. Instead, she spent the months following the Evacuation of Settlement 2 by recruiting the Outsider Villages to join the COG and help fight the Swarm together.
In Frost, 42 A.E., the last Outsider Village to be conscripted was the Riftworm Village which was led by Cpl. Diaz's uncle named Chief Oscar Diaz. Shortly after they met, the Swarm attacked the Village. During the battle, a Snatcher managed to capture Cpl. Diaz. Inside the Snatcher, Cpl. Diaz was connected to the Hivemind and she was compelled by the consciousness of the late Queen Myrrah to control the members of the Swarm to kill the humans. Cpl. Diaz compelled a Warden to murder Chief Oscar Diaz.
Cpl. Diaz was released by Sgt. Marcus Fenix and Cpt. James Dominic Fenix. In her grief, she revealed the truth of her visions and her Locust amulet to her squad. Sgt. Fenix who was somewhat aware about the Locust Horde's origins since Operation: Hollow Storm advised Cpl. Diaz and Lt. Delmont Walker to travel north to the New Hope Research Facility in order to find answers and help Cpl. Diaz. Cpl. Diaz and Lt. Walker took JACK and the Village's Skiff up north in the Kadar Valley where New Hope was located near Mount Kadar.
Order of Battle[]
Arriving at New Hope[]
After driving for hours, Sgt. Fenix sent the coordinates of New Hope to Cpl. Diaz and Lt. Walker and he advised them to look for the train tracks as New Hope was disguised as "Jameson Shipping Depot." Following the tracks, Cpl. Diaz and Lt. Walker found a collapsed tunnel, but with an alternative route into the forest. While they are in the forest, Cpl. Diaz found the campsite of the former members of the Riftworm Village named Lena, Norsko and Freddie. Upon reading the campsite's journal, they are attempting to camp at New Hope, but a stationed DeeBee Shepherd shot and killed Freddie, forcing Lena and Norsko into the Kadar Valley. While searching for answers, Cpl. Diaz felt compelled to find and rescue the Outsiders as well.
Further in the forest, Cpl. Diaz found the train tracks again as well as a train tunnel that was barricaded by the New Coalition. Finding the Swarm Pods inside the train tunnel, Cpl. Diaz discovered that New Hope may be overrun by the Swarm. Cpl. Diaz and Lt. Walker found the rear exit of New Hope, but the entrance was blocked by the derailed train. Going around the facility to the main entrance, a Windflare of Razorhail began to strike the area. While they are trying to reach New Hope, Sgt. Fenix warned them that they are going to find unpleasant truths about the Coalition inside New Hope. Cpl. Diaz and Lt. Walker managed to reach the entrance, but it was guarded by a Stump as First Minister Jinn's DeeBee guard became corrupted. After destroying the Stump, the two arrived at New Hope.
Entering the Facility[]
Cpl. Diaz and Lt. Walker entered the facility as Sgt. Fenix advised them to reach the biogenetics lab by finding a round circular door at the end of a long hallway. The hallway was barricaded by the New Coalition, but Cpl. Diaz and Lt. Walker are able to reach the hallway through the broken walls in the lobby bathroom. However, the door at the end of the hallway was destroyed and it blocked the entrance from when Sgt. Fenix was last at the facility.
Cpl. Diaz and Lt. Walker went into the rear courtyard to find another entrance. Upon entering the courtyard, Cpl. Diaz and Lt. Walker are met by a Warden. After destroying the Warden, Cpl. Diaz and Lt. Walker are attacked by the Juvies that originated from a Hive inside the security building. Cpl. Diaz and Lt. Walker managed to re-enter the facility through a cargo delivery door.
Upon entrance, they discovered that the cargo was the acidic gas tanks that are meant to purge the facility in case of emergencies. However, due to the facility's age and lack of maintenance, many of the pipes had gas leaks by proving to be fatal to any biological matter. Entering the security and mail room, Cpl. Diaz and Lt. Walker are met by the dormant Rejects. After passing the area, they entered a clinical area where they are attacked by a Flock of Leeches. After eliminating the Flock, the floor collapsed and Cpl. Diaz and Lt. Walker landed into a cell.
Searching for Answers[]
Cpl. Diaz reported to Sgt. Fenix about the jail cells that are in the facility and Sgt. Fenix admitted that he did not see the cells when he went to New Hope during Hollow Storm, but revealed that New Hope imprisoned and experimented on the children of the Imulsion miners who were sick with Rustlung, and that the experiments were conducted by a scientist named Dr. Niles Samson who had preserved his likeness into an artificial intelligence construct. Sgt. Fenix advised them to find the control room and reactivate the terminal in order to ask Dr. Niles Samson their questions.
Further in the cell block, Cpl. Diaz and Lt. Walker located a cell adorned with child's toys, drawings, and furnishings with an observation room. The documents found in the observation revealed that it belonged to a female child who exhibited genetic immunity to Imulsion. Dr. Niles Samson quarantined her for study and grew to favor her - gifting her with toys and child amenities while they recorded and studied her. Cpl. Diaz and Lt. Walker then discovered the biogenetics lab full of stasis tanks containing specimens. Sgt. Fenix revealed that the specimens were the mutated children called "Sires" and believed that they were connected to the Locust Horde.
Cpl. Diaz began to compile her questions before meeting the A.I. of Dr. Niles Samson to ask him about why he experimented on the children and how his work was connected to her. Reaching the control room, Cpl. Diaz found a data disk that revealed that a fringe political party under the Monroe Administration believed in Dr. Niles Samson's work and they offered to transfer him to a secret facility that was nearby before New Hope was shut down. Cpl. Diaz reactivated the Niles A.I. system who was still continuing his dialogue from when Sgt. Fenix shut him down. JACK downloaded any possible data from Niles. While most was corrupted, Lt. Walker found the file names on Kadar. Sgt. Fenix was aware about the name and he had Damon Baird look at the files.
Escaping New Hope[]
While they are in the control room, a Flock of Leeches attacked and they attached themselves to the control system. The Niles A.I. believed that it was finally time to purge the facility. Niles released the acidic gas and explosives in the facility. Cpl. Diaz and Lt. Walker ran from the gas and they traversed up in the facility to reach the rooftops. As the facility began to collapse, the Rejects, Drones and Juvies began to attack. Cpl. Diaz and Lt. Walker fled to the inner courtyard, eliminated the Swarm and exited the facility.
Cpl. Diaz and Lt. Walker managed to escape from the New Hope Research Facility as it self-destructed. The two returned to the Skiff that was outside the forest which was surrounding the New Hope Facility to continue forward. Sgt. Fenix returned to reveal that the scientists that are at New Hope fled to a facility in Mount Kadar which held the Locust stronghold that was called Nexus once and they sent a radio message to New Hope, but the origin point was scrambled. Sgt. Fenix advised them that the next plan of action was to find the facility in Mount Kadar.
Aftermath[]
According to the files, a message was delivered to New Hope from the Mount Kadar Facility, but it's origin point was scrambled. Lt. Walker suggested that they should attend to the radio towers in the Kadar Valley and attempt to unscramble the origin and pinpoint the exact location of the Mount Kadar facility.
