- "His mistake. I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but that's what it was. A mistake, and it cost him his head."
- —Damon Baird writing about Ozaba's death in his journal
Lieutenant Ozaba[2] was a Gear soldier in the Coalition of Ordered Governments army who served as the commanding officer of Kilo Squad in the 4th Ephyra Light Infantry.
Biography[]
Patrolling Old Town[]
More than a month after Emergence Day, Ozaba and two other members of Kilo Squad, Pvt. Damon Baird and Pvt. Augustus Cole, were on an evening patrol with several other Gears in Halvo Bay's Old Town, which had been evacuated. An hour into the deployment, noises could be heard on the rooftops, which Ozaba dismissed, believing them to not be caused by Locust. A Sniper situated on the rooftop then opened fired on Ozaba, shooting him in the head, killing him. Cole provided covering fire for Baird as he ran to Ozaba. After realizing he was dead, Baird lifted his body over his shoulder and ran back to cover near Cole, who, alongside Baird and the other Gears, managed to push back the Locust. After the skirmish, Col. Ezra Loomis arrived and heard Cole's account of the event. After collecting Ozaba's COG Tags, Loomis told Baird that he would oversee his promotion to Lieutenant in his former CO's place.[3]
Behind the scenes[]
- In Gears of War: Judgment, Ozaba was mentioned but never named. The writers Rob Auten and Tom Bissell pulled his name from the game at the last minute because they named him after someone they knew.[4]
