Neal was the husband of Bernadette Mataki, and kept their farm on the island of Galangi running while she was off fighting in the Pendulum Wars. Early in the Locust War, Neal started seeing someone else, and when Bernie found out, she divorced him. A year later, after the Hammer of Dawn strikes, Bernie left the farm to Neal because she was leaving for the island of Noroa.
