- "As I said, time will tell. If, as I've theorized, the heart of the hive itself acts as a quasi-central nervous system. Then...well, the others should die off."
- —Hana, explaining the effects of the Venom bomb on the Swarm hive
Doctor Hana Cole is a Coalition of Ordered Governments scientist during the Swarm Invasion. As the daughter of famed Thrashball star and war-hero, Private Augustus Cole, Hana did not follow her father's path and instead decided to benefit society through her science and inventions. During the Swarm Invasion, Hana Cole theorized that within each Hive, all members of the Swarm were connected to the heart of the Hive - and that destroying it would kill all Swarm originating from the particular Hive. With this theory, she set in motion the Hivebuster Offensive, in which squads of soldiers called Hivebusters would allow themselves to be taken by Snatchers, infiltrate the Hive, plant Venom Bombs invented by Hana, and evacuate the Hive before it could be destroyed by the destructive, venomous gas.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Hana Cole was born shortly after the end of the Locust War by her father, Thrashball star and war-hero, Private Augustus Cole. Pvt. Cole had begun wanting a child since Operation: Hollow Storm in 14 A.E., but didn't want to bring one into the world until the planet was safe. Hana was then born and raised in New Ephyra, while her father continued to participate in Thrashball, becoming the President of the Coalition Thrashball League.
Instead of following her father's footsteps into the industry of Thrashball or other entertainment, she became interested in science and technology. Growing up, Hana's mother gifted her with many books on her birthdays and various holidays. As an adult, Hana then completed multiple advanced degrees in Biochemistry, Toxicology, and Chemistry.
Swarm Invasion[]
Researching the Swarm[]
In 42 A.E., it was discovered that the Locust Horde had not only survived the Imulsion Countermeasure Weapon, but had been evolving from exposure to it during the last twenty-five years. Emerging from their Imulsion crystalline cocoons as Scions, they created a bio-organism called the Swarm out of their Locust burial sites to be able to transform any living creature into a soldier for their army - creating Hives. There, a creature called a Snatcher would kidnap a single human, place them in a pod and connect them to the Hivemind, and transform them into Juvies, which would then transform into Drones for the Swarm Army. By the time of the Swarm Invasion, Hana Cole was already an accomplished scientist. Hana chose to follow her father's other footsteps into becoming a member of the Coalition of Ordered Governments Army.
Hana was employed to study the Swarm, their Hives, and their network. In her research, Hana discovered that all members originating from a particular Hive were connected to the heart of the Hive, which acted as a quasi-central nervous system. She then theorized that instead of killing every Swarm individually in battle, one would instead need to destroy the Hive, which in theory would then kill the Swarm connected to said Hive, as it would disconnect them from their network and to each other. However, Swarm Hives were heavily guarded and overrun with hundreds, if not thousands of creatures. But Colonel Victor Hoffman saw promise in her theory, unlike First Minister Mina Jinn, who rejected Col. Hoffman's suggestion to attack the Swarm in their Hives similar to Operation: Hollow Storm. Col. Hoffman recruited Doctor Cole and began to devise an offensive to fight the Swarm on their home turf.
Hivebuster Offensive[]
Creating the Hivebusters[]
Col. Hoffman sought to test Hana's theories about the Swarm through the Hivebuster Offensive. With the Hivebusters, a group of Gears would allow themselves to be captured and podded by the Swarm. Once inside their Hive, they would emerge from the pod before they would begin cellular breakdown and plant a Venom Bomb. The bomb was invented by Hana and had the ability to release a large cloud of venomous gas that could destroy any biological matter. The trick was finding Gears with a death wish considering it was most likely a suicide mission. The trick is being able to fight their way out of the Hive and escape before the Venom could kill them as well. Among one of the first to join Team Scorpio was Tak, a relative of Col. Hoffman's who agreed to act as pilot for the King Raven responsible for evacuating the Hivebusters.
Eventually, Col. Hoffman and Hana Cole found three volunteers. The first, and team leader, was Cpl. Jeremiah Keegan of the Onyx Guard. He only served in the first year of the Locust War and was transferred to Azura, regrettably unable to fight the war with his fellow Gears. The second was Lahni Kaliso, who was part of the 81st "Brash" Brigade responsible for killing Locust stragglers after Victory Day. However, she was recently pardoned from prison after four years for causing the death of her senior officer while performing a dangerous act to protect her squad. Col. Hoffman offered to reunite her with her squad if she succeeded in the mission. The last was former Outsider, Leslie Macallister, who lost his entire family to the Swarm during the Ambush on Bravelle and Croya.
Hivebust of Sanctum[]
Mission to Pahanu[]
Hivebust of Pahanu[]
Hivebust of Bravelle[]
During the Hivebust of Bravelle, Team Scorpio discovered that Hana's theory that the remaining Swarm from a particular Hive would die once the Hive was destroyed to be wrong after Swarm from the Bravelle Hive continued to survive its destruction and attack.

Hana is much more serious and intellectual than her father Augustus Cole, and while her father is a soldier and sportsman, Hana prefers educational pursuits, such as nearly all fields of science. This stems from her father wanting his daughter to have a life different than a soldier's. Though she respects her father a great deal, Hana finds it annoying that due to her relation him, others immediately assume that she must also be a Thrashball player and fan. In fact, she finds the discussion of sports tedious. Though she is relatively new to combat situations, Hana performed reasonably well during the mission in the Pahanu Islands and while terrified after being nearly taken by a Snatcher, she nonetheless continued on with the mission to create an effective tactic against the Swarm. Even though she aided Colonel Hoffman in creating the Hivebuster campaign, Hana cared for the soldiers who willingly allowed themselves to be taken.
