Gears of War: E-Day is the eighth game in the Gears of War franchise. A prequel that takes place on Emergence Day, fourteen years before the first game, during which the Locust Horde emerge on the surface of Sera to begin their genocidal war against humanity, and follows Sgt. Marcus Fenix and Cpl. Dominic Santiago fighting to protect the civilians.

No official release date has been announced yet at this time.

Story[]

Six weeks after the end of the Pendulum Wars, the humans of Sera are attacked by a new, subterranean threat called the Locust Horde. Sgt. Marcus Fenix and Cpl. Dominic Santiago, war heroes of the Pendulum Wars and childhood friends, fight together against the new threat on what would later be known as Emergence Day, the beginning of the Locust War.

E-Day is considered a mainline series entry. The story is told from Marcus's perspective, while Dom serves as the game's deuteragonist. The game is an "origin story" for the duo, in that by this point in the timeline, while the two are familiar with each other, they are in the early stages of their friendship, each still grieving over the loss of Dom's brother, Carlos. The two are depicted as different individuals from their personas in the first game. This includes their more normal human proportions.[1] The game's story begins on the titular E-Day, and takes place over a number of days.[2]

An interview was held between the Coalition & Xbox Journalist and podcaster Jez Corden at the Xbox Games Showcase 2024 on 15th June 2024. The Coalition's Creative Director Matt Searcy was asked if players can once again expect Gears' frenetic multiplayer combat to return. The Team stated that they “wasn't ready” to dive deep yet at this stage but reassured fans concerned by stating the following: “I would say, this is the next mainline Gears game”. "Gears has a pretty clear DNA for gameplay modes, so you can probably anticipate where we'll be going with E-Day."[4]

Behind the scenes[]

  • The idea for E-Day has differed between sources. According to Rod Fergusson, the idea for an E-Day based game existed as far back as the series' first entry, but that the technology didn't exist until after Gears 5 to implement the vision for the project given the scale of the titular event. According to Fergusson, requests for an E-Day prequel were common amongst the Gears fanbase.[5] According to Matt Searcy and Nicole Fawcette however, the idea for E-Day emerged sometime after the release of Gears 5, and roughly concurrent with the releases of Gears: Hivebusters, Gears Tactics, and the Covid-19 pandemic. Said pandemic forced The Coalition to adapt, which gave the development team time to plan the next mainline entry.[1]
  • The game was designed using Unreal Engine 5. After development concluded on Gears 5, The Coalition focused on familiarizing itself with the engine.[6]
  • The game will explore the origin of the Chainsaw Lancer and how it become a fully operational weapon.[7]
  • Special attention was given to the Locust in the game. The design brief simply stated "Locust are the 'monsters under the bed.' What would happen to the people of Sera in seeing this overwhelming army of monsters and trying to figure out...what are you going to do?" In practice, emphasis was put on the nature of E-Day itself, of this being the first time humanity had encountered the Locust, and as such, the Locust appearing all the more terrifying for it. The design team prioritized redefining the Drone, which in their view, had become "mere cannon fodder" as the series progressed." The Drones in E-Day were designed to be fearsome, intimidating, and brutal, towering above their human foes. Other Locust breeds were scaled up from there.[1]
