- "We identified an insurgent element and eliminated it."
- —Fahz summarizing his actions in the Settlement 2 Protest Massacre
First Lieutenant Fahz Chutani is a Gear officer of the Coalition of Ordered Governments Army during the Outsider Movement and Swarm Invasion. Born in the post-Locust War, Fahz Chutani was raised in an era of peace. He later joined the COG army to protect and serve. During his training, he met and familiarized himself with Lt. Delmont Walker and Lt. James Dominic Fenix. The three served together during the Outsider Movement, in which a group of anti-establishment villagers known as the Outsiders challenged the COG. Lt. Chutani was also present and participated in a massacre of civilians protesting in Settlement 2, by the orders of First Minister Mina Jinn and Lt Fenix.
Several months after the massacre, Lt. Chutani was reunited with Cpt. Fenix and Lt. Walker, along with Cpl. Kait Diaz, a former Outsider, when the Locust Horde reemerged as the Swarm, starting the Swarm Invasion. Following an incident with the Hammer of Dawn during the Evacuation of Settlement 2, Lt. Chutani began doing classified missions with Cpt. Fenix, developing a close bond. As Cpl. Diaz began to uncover her heritage and connection with the Locust and Swarm, Lt. Chutani and Cpt. Fenix rejoined Cpl. Diaz and Lt. Walker. After relaunching the UIR's Hammer of Dawn and recovering Hammer of Dawn targeting beacons, Lt. Chutani helped fight against the Swarm and their attack on Ephyra.
Biography[]
Early life[]
Fahz Chutani was born in New Ephyra during the Interwar Period. Fahz's parents originated from Vasgar, when it was occupied by the Union of Independent Republics. They fled to the Coalition of Ordered Governments during the Pendulum Wars to escape from persecution, since the UIR troops had orders to execute any doctor that they captured and Fahz's father was a surgeon.[2]
Interwar Period[]
Joining the Coalition[]
Chutani joined the COG army in 39 A.E. At the Coalition of Ordered Governments Military Academy, Chutani made an image for himself as a soldier who was the fastest, strongest, and best of the Coalition. At the academy, he met James Dominic Fenix and Delmont Walker. While he did not get along with the two, they had a rapport with each other.
After graduating, Fahz got his commission as an officer in the COG Army. He developed a reputation as one of First Minister Mina Jinn's "golden boys" along with Fenix and Walker. At some point, his lower right leg was amputated and replaced by a cybernetic prosthetic.[2]
Settlement 2 Protest Massacre[]
Chutani was assigned to the COG security force in Settlement 2 with Fenix and Walker. The three were involved in the Settlement 2 Protest Massacre that began as a non-violent protest against Jinn and her totalitarian policies.[2] When Chutani and the others were deployed to quell the riot, events quickly turned violent he as some protesters had begun throwing fire bombs at them. Fenix, on the orders of Jinn, ordered his DeeBee unit to open fire at the aggressors. Chutani followed, while Walker kept his DeeBee's from killing anyone, not wanting to kill unarmed protestors. While Walker became disillusioned with the COG and convinced a guilt ridden Fenix to go AWOL with him, Chutani saw their actions as justified and felt no regret over what happened.
Swarm Invasion[]
Training in New Ephyra[]
After Delta Squad returned from their unauthorized mission from Azura, Chutani had been training in hand-to-hand combat with a training bot as he had previously been banned from participating in training programs with other Gears due to being overly aggressive with opponents. He meets Fenix, Walker, and their friend and former Outsider conscript, Cpl. Kait Diaz. After mildly insulting Chutani, he shut off the training bot and challenged Fenix to a sparring match. Although Chutani had sucker punched him before their match started, Fenix quickly beat him and angrily walked off.
Evacuation of Settlement 2[]
Chutani was assigned to Delta and deployed with Fenix, Walker and Cpl. Augustus Cole on a King Raven. When their Raven was shot down by a Swarmak and crashed onto the roof of The New Ephyran, Chutani and Walker managed to get out before the wreckage sunk into the building with Fenix and Cole still inside. Attempting to run from the crumbling roof behind them, Chutani and Walker later fell in when the floor gave out. After Chutani and Walker rescued Fenix and Cole from the wreckage, they made their way out to help Cpl. Elizabeth Carmine defend her convoy from Swarm forces before moving into the plaza. Chutani later got into a small argument with Walker over the latter's regrets for what had happened in Settlement 2 before Fenix ordered them stop. When Cole questioned what happened, Chutani stated they had put down an insurgent group while Walker angrily refuted that Chutani had openly killed protestors, to which he still felt no regret for. Delta arrived to the town hub to assist their old training instructor Chief Sergeant Clayton Carmine clear out the Swarm to evacuate survivors. After Delta cleared the enemy forces and evacuated the civilians in the area, a Flock appeared and seperated Chutani and Cole from the others.
Chutani and Cole were pursued by the same Swarmak that had shot them down earlier. Taking cover in the Palace Theater, Chutani and Cole regrouped with the rest of Delta before the Swarmak entered the theater, which was promptly killed by Cole sending grenades down the Swarmak's throat. Chutani instigated a fight with Walker once again of the protest massacre, leading Chutani to reveal the truth of Fenix's actions during the massacre out of spite, leading to Walker and Diaz losing trust in their friend. As the evac convoy arrived, a large number of Swarm attacked their location. Chutani repelled the Swarm attack but he and Delta were overrun. Fenix requested Damon Baird activate the Hammer of Dawn despite having no targeting data by using Fenix himself as the beacon. Fenix was successful in eliminating the Swarm threat, the Hammer began to malfunction and fire wildly, resulting in Cpl. Elizabeth Carmine's death and Fenix becoming critically injured.
Classified Missions[]
After Fenix's recovery and promotion to Captain, Jinn had Chutani assigned to his command. In the following four months, the two participated in classified missions by First Minister Jinn. Chutani eventually became friends with his former adversary as Fenix pushed Walker and Diaz away out of guilt for his previous actions and Carmine's death. During this time, Chutani encourages Fenix to take a more by-the-books approach to being an officer.
Siege of the Riftworm Village[]
Four months after the siege of Settlement 2, Chutani was sent with Cpt. Fenix and his father, Sgt. Marcus Fenix, to assist in evacuating the Riftworm Village. The three had arrived just after Cpl. Diaz's uncle and village Chief Oscar Diaz was killed by a Warden. Chutani was present when Fenix gave Diaz his condolences for Oscar and suggested they continue with the evacuation. This caused a small argument with Walker that soon led to him and Diaz defying orders to go on a rogue mission to the Kadar Valley. Chutani returned to New Ephyra with both JD and Marcus Fenix.

Personality and Traits[]
Fahz Chutani can best be described as arrogant, unpleasant and smug yet a dedicated soldier of the COG. As a result of his attitude, most of his fellow Gears despise him or find him intolerable, but Fahz does nothing to change that. Delmont Walker states that Fahz constantly drives himself to excel and be the best, desiring to be the strongest, fastest and toughest Gear in the COG, though he scoffs at being the smartest or humblest. Fahz has shown a strong commitment towards the COG and therefore doesn't show any sympathy towards those who question or rebel against the COG. For this, he showed almost no remorse in the riot that led to many civilian deaths. However, he agreed to help JD and his friends out on a secret mission in Vasgar to restore the Hammer of Dawn against Jinn's wishes.
Fahz especially clashed with Delmont Walker, mostly due to having opposite sympathies and morals. The two would often get into arguments and nearly get into physical confrontations with each other, as while Del has deep sympathies towards civilians and innocent people, Fahz has almost none and couldn't care less about civilians. Del called Fahz a coward for this.
Despite this attitude, Fahz is a capable soldier who looks out for his squadmates when on a mission. Further, after siding with JD Fenix and Kait, Fahz proves the capacity of loyalty for his squad. He and Del would even save each other a few times, despite their deep differences. Fahz was even willing to oppose First Minister Jinn after she attempted to have Kait arrested.
JD and Fahz were often shown to clash due to their differing beliefs. After JD's injury and his promotion to Captain, JD and Fahz became friends to the surprise of Kait and Del. When JD arrived in Vasgar with Fahz, he told Kait and Del that it turned out that Fahz wasn't so bad though Fahz claimed that JD had just gotten used to him. Fahz acknowledged that JD's change of heart was genuine, commenting that he'd tried to get JD to embrace "Dark JD" but Kait and Del brought out the best in their friend. Fahz later asked if JD and Del missed him while they were gone and implied that he genuinely missed the two when they left the COG. Although fierce rivals with JD, Fahz holds deeper respect for JD’s father, Marcus Fenix, both for his service to the COG and status as a hero of the Locust War, and immediately shuts up when Marcus tells him to.
While working with Delta, Fahz showed that despite his attitude, he genuinely cared, joking around with his squad mates and apologizing to Kait for how insensitive he was after her uncle's death. Most of all, Fahz showed a great deal of sadness and regret after learning of JD/Delmont's death, showing that deep down, he did care for them as friends.
