- "These we save. These will outlast all our bodies. On the land, in the sea, or on the ground, we remain Gears. You can leave the bodies where they fall. But we save COG tags whenever we can."
- —Ezra Loomis to Damon Baird
The COG Tag was a form of identification worn by Gears of the Coalition of Ordered Governments. Whenever a Gear had fallen in battle, the tags would be retrieved when possible. This was a way to keep track of soldiers that were killed in action. It has been said that the families of deceased Gears were prepared to pay substantial amounts of money to have the COG Tag of a fallen loved one recovered. The text written on a tag says: "Property of the Coalition of Ordered Governments".
Appearances[]
Gears of War[]
There are thirty COG Tags (thirty-three in the PC version) scattered throughout the Gears of War campaign. Although many of them are located off the beaten path, every one of them has a corresponding Crimson Omen in the vicinity. Keep your eyes peeled for the spray painted Crimson Omen insignia, as that is your surefire clue that there is a Tag nearby. Some of the Tags are on the floor directly near the Omen, whereas others are less obvious.
There are three achievements for getting the COG Tags. When you get 10, 20 and 30 tags, you get Time to Remember, Honor-Bound and For the Fallen respectively. As in other achievements, the color of the pictures changes due to the difficulty, with 30 tags red, 20 tags yellow and 10 tags white as shown to the right.
Minh Young Kim is unlocked as a playable character in Gears of War 2 Multiplayer after collecting ten COG Tags in the original campaign.
